What are the main reasons producers and bands hire me to compose for their music?

“I want to do something different.” - Jens Bogren

So far, the main reason I hear from bands or producers is to add a cinematic or epic element to their music. When Jens Bogren contacted me, his words were, “I want to do something different.” That ended up being cinematic composing that took Amorphis “Halo” to a new level of storytelling through their music. The epic side of things tends to be huge orchestra and choir arrangements to accompany a band’s music. But it can also be more minimal string writing for solo orchestra instruments.

Composing from Scratch and Making Existing Arrangements Realistic

Generally speaking, what I do is very time consuming - not just for me, but especially for anyone inexperienced. The demand for higher quality orchestra and synth composing is on the rise. When bands or producers cut corners and just lob the MIDI work into a library, it’s noticeable. And we’re seeing a huge surge in experimentation and leveling up of productions. And while it may be fun to give it a go when you’re writing a record or track, ultimately it requires serious dedication to the art of composing to produce something that wont be a regret.

What styles do producers and bands usually hire me to do?

From Doom Eternal to Trent Reznor/Nine Inch Nails

Honestly, name it - I feel I’ve been asked to do it all. One of the main requests is to bring the Doom Eternal (Mick Gordon) style sounds into their productions. But I also get asked to either (from scratch) compose for orchestra or its individual instruments - or - take already written parts and make them more realistic and timeless. I also seem to be hired for my Nine Inch Nails/Trent Reznor influence - especially for industrial and darkwave projects. Which also means I get a LOT of requests for my synthwave style based on my Deathspell Omega cover of “Abscission”.

What was the moment that made me return to working in the band & producer world?

It was January of 2021, and one of my favorite producers reached out to me via Facebook. He asked if I’d be up for adding some cinematic and composer-centric elements to an album. That producer was Jens Bogren (Opeth, Devin Townsend), and the band was the legendary Amorphis. Working on “Halo” for Amorphis illustrated a path for me to follow in parallel to my career as a composer for film/tv/games. Working with bands & producers keeps me active in the music community I was practically raised in as a metal musician from age 16 in 2002 to now. Fortunately, this means I also get hired to write music for amazing music-based companies like Ibanez, Toontrack, NeuralDSP, and many more.

Needless to say, if you need to elevate a record or track you’re writing or producing, or have a product that needs music for market launch using the gear itself, I can help — so just reach out to me!
